How long does it take to lose weight?

The honest answer is that it depends almost entirely on the rate you can actually sustain — not the rate you can manage for three weeks.

0.5 lb per week

Slow, nearly invisible week to week, and the easiest to hold for a year. A 250 kcal daily deficit — about one snack. Best if you have less than 20 lbs to lose or you are protecting muscle.

1 lb per week

The default recommendation, and the rate most people can keep up. A 500 kcal daily deficit. 40 lbs takes about 9 months at this pace.

2 lb per week

Aggressive. A 1,000 kcal daily deficit is hard to hit without hunger, muscle loss, and rebound. Usually only appropriate at higher starting weights and with supervision.

A date is a number. A photo is a reason.

Knowing you hit 160 lbs next March is useful planning. Seeing what you look like at 160 lbs is what actually keeps people going.

Every weight-loss plan starts as an abstraction — a number on a scale, a date on a calendar. The part your brain responds to is the picture, and that is the gap this site exists to close. The AI weight loss simulator takes a photo you already have and edits it to show the same person at the target weight, keeping your face, clothes, and background intact.

The progression simulator pairs directly with the milestone table above — one upload, four generated checkpoints, stitched into a single timeline image you can keep on your phone. Your first preview is free.

A note on accuracy

This calculator uses steady-rate arithmetic and the standard 3,500 kcal-per-pound approximation. Real weight loss is not linear — it is faster at first, slows as you get lighter, and plateaus are a normal part of the process. The calorie figure is an estimate that ignores metabolic adaptation, medication, and medical conditions. Nothing here is medical or nutritional advice; talk to a doctor or a registered dietitian before starting a weight-loss plan.

Goal Weight Date Calculator FAQ

Questions about rates, dates, calories, and what the number actually means.

How does the goal weight date calculator work?

It divides the weight you want to lose by the rate you plan to lose it at, then counts that many weeks forward from today. If you want to lose 40 pounds at 1 pound a week, it is 40 weeks — the calculator just does the arithmetic and gives you the calendar date instead of a number of weeks.

What is a realistic weekly weight loss rate?

Most clinical guidance lands on 1 to 2 pounds (about 0.5 to 1 kg) per week. Faster than that is usually water weight early on, and it gets harder to sustain without losing muscle. If you are unsure, 1 pound a week is the safest default and the one most people can actually hold to.

How many calories do I need to cut to hit that rate?

Roughly 3,500 calories equals a pound of fat, so a pound a week is about a 500-calorie daily deficit. The calculator shows this number for whatever rate you pick. To turn it into an actual daily calorie target, run your numbers through the TDEE calculator and subtract the deficit.

Will I really lose weight at a steady rate?

No — almost nobody does. Weight loss is faster in the first few weeks (water and glycogen), then slows, and plateaus are normal. Treat the date as a planning target, not a promise. The milestone table is more useful than the final date: it gives you checkpoints to measure against.

Can I see what I will look like at my goal weight?

Yes, that is what the rest of this site does. Upload a photo to the weight loss simulator and set the amount you plan to lose, and it generates a realistic before-and-after on your own picture. The progression simulator goes further and shows four milestones along the way — the same checkpoints this calculator gives you dates for.

Does this calculator work for weight gain?

Yes. Enter a goal weight above your current weight and it projects the date the same way, showing the daily calorie surplus instead of a deficit.

Is the goal weight date calculator free?

Completely. It runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded, no account is needed, and it uses no credits. Credits only apply to the AI photo simulator.
